Most of you have heard of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) — a lifesaving nonprofit founded in 1980 by a mother whose daughter was tragically killed by a drunk driver. One woman’s courageous fight against drunk driving sparked a movement that has transformed our nation for decades.
Today, we carry that mission forward, driven by the belief that together, we can end impaired driving in our lifetime. This will require collective change and shared responsibility — looking out for one another and protecting our communities from preventable harm.
For those who may not know, MADD is more than just mothers. It is fathers, siblings, families, friends, and community members united by one powerful mission: to end impaired driving.

Impaired driving significantly impacts families across Minnesota
From 2020 to 2024:
- There were 668 alcohol-related driving deaths.
- Alcohol-related crashes caused approximately 1,926 serious injuries.
- There were 125,336 driving while impaired arrests.
- There were more than 15,000 impaired-involved crashes.
- Approximately 1 in 7 Minnesotan’s has at least one DWI
How MADD Makes a Difference
Victim Services
The heart and soul of MADD is our Victim Services program, which provides emotional support, resources, and advocacy to victims and survivors of this 100% preventable crime all at no cost to the individuals and families we serve.
Victim Services help survivors navigate the court system, connect with resources, find support groups, and simply have someone to talk to who understands what they are going through.
Underage Drinking Prevention – Creating a Safer Future
Our hopes for a safer future are riding on tomorrow’s drivers. By educating today’s youth about the dangers of alcohol and impaired driving, we are taking a giant step toward fulfilling our vision of a nation without drunk driving.
We provide Underage Drinking Prevention programs at no cost to schools, youth groups, and communities. These programs focus on decision-making, peer pressure, alcohol education, and real-life consequences.
Prevention is how we stop impaired driving before it starts.
Community Engagement
We partner with businesses, schools, law enforcement, and community organizations to support victims and survivors while also sharing prevention and awareness messaging. We provide presentations, attend community events, and work with partners to spread our lifesaving message throughout Minnesota.
